Empowering a Community with Education and Sisterhood

By: Christina Rodriguez (Founder and CEO)

The story behind the name: Growing up in Pilsen, my parents were always working trying to provide the best for my sisters and I. They did their best to help in my education, but the real heroes of shaping me into the woman I am today, are my sisters. My biological sisters and all my sisters from cousins, friends, and the women in my life that helped and supported me in life.

I’ve gone through different fields trying to find the right fit for me, I always knew that I wanted to help communities. Finding my love of education, I’ve worked hard to support my craft of teaching; along with my certification in Elementary General Education, proceeding in getting my masters in Special Education, attending conferences on Standard Based Grading, and my continuous research on Best Practice in Education. Now with more than 10 years of experience and preparation, I am ready to extend my knowledge and services to help support my neighborhood kids and schools.

Sisterhood of Pilsen is a nonprofit organization that is geared towards providing educational support for our families that are struggling in this time of gentrification in Pilsen. Focusing on where the child is and where they are supposed to be, using the Common Core Standards of Illinois as our road map. Our mission is to work together as a community, school, parents, and teachers to help our children succeed and prepare for their futures.

Like the saying says, “It takes a village to raise a child.” Through local donations from the community and grants, we will be working with our public and private schools to help provide these services, because “It takes a community, like Pilsen, to raise a strong and independent child.”
